Psalm 46:10 Meaning: “Be Still, and Know That I Am God”

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10, KJV)

Psalm 46:10 is often read as an invitation to a quiet morning with coffee and a Bible. That's a good thing, but the psalm around it is anything but quiet.

A psalm for chaos

Psalm 46 opens with a declaration: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (46:1). Then it describes the worst it can imagine: the earth removed, mountains carried into the sea, waters roaring (46:2–3), nations raging and kingdoms moving (46:6). The response is not panic but trust: “Therefore will not we fear” (46:2).

Right before verse 10, God is pictured ending war: “He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder” (46:9).

What “be still” means

In that setting, “be still” is less “relax” and more “stop.” Stop fighting. Stop striving. Put down the weapons you're relying on and recognize who God is. It is spoken to the anxious believer and to the raging nations alike.

“And know that I am God.” Stillness has a purpose: knowing. When we stop trying to control everything, we see more clearly that God is in control.

“I will be exalted.” The verse ends with confidence. However loud the chaos, God's name will be lifted up in all the earth.

Practicing Psalm 46:10

  • Name what you're striving over. Work, a relationship, the news, the future. Hand it to God specifically.
  • Take a real pause. Two minutes without your phone (after you tap for today's verse!) to read Psalm 46 slowly.
  • Say verse 1 out loud. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
  • End with verse 11. “The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.”
