Isaiah 41:10 Meaning: “Fear Thou Not; for I Am with Thee”

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10, KJV)

Isaiah 41:10 packs an entire sermon on fear into one sentence. It gives two commands and five reasons, and every reason is about God.

The setting

In Isaiah 41, God speaks to Israel as His chosen servant: “Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away” (41:9). Around them the nations are trembling and making idols for security (41:5–7). God's people are told to take a different path: trust the God who chose them.

Two commands

“Fear thou not.” This is one of the most repeated commands in Scripture. It is not a denial that scary things exist. It is an invitation to see them in light of who is with you.

“Be not dismayed.” Dismay is the look-around-and-panic feeling. God says: look at Me instead.

Five reasons

  1. “I am with thee.” His presence.
  2. “I am thy God.” His relationship with you. He is not a distant God but your God.
  3. “I will strengthen thee.” Strength for what's in front of you.
  4. “I will help thee.” Help when strength isn't enough.
  5. “I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” When you can't stand, He holds you up.
